We practiced drawing swans starting with the number 2.
THen formed the head and body from this.
Students added the water lever at half way.
They were encouraged to add pond life to the underwater area.
We brainstormed and made a list of what could be in a pond environment:
frogs, tadpoles, fish, dragonflies, flies, butterflies, turtles, ducks...

Fold paper in half. This fold is the surface of the water.
WIth a PENCIL, Draw the swan on the surface of the water.
Add bottom of swan under the fold (belly and feet).

Madelynn, 1st grade, is here outlining her drawing with a
permanent marker before coloring and  painting.
Kenut, 5th grade is coloring the areas he does not want to paint with crayons.

Color all details (excluding the sky and water)

Wassily Kandinsky Paintings

Wassily Kandinsky, a Russian born German Artist, was an abstract artist, who dabbled for a time in the movement of Abstract Expressionism. He studied music growing up and was a teacher of Law & Economics. He left his job later in life to become and artist. He used his love for music to drive his art. He admired artists of his time that pushed the boundaries of tradition in the art world. He was inspired by Claude Monet's impressionistic style. He loved color! He believed that colors were more than just seen, but alive and emotional. He listened to music before and during his creative process.
One time, while watching an opera, he said..
"I saw all my colors in spirit before my eyes. Wild, almost crazy lines were sketched in front of me."
Kandinsky moved from Impressionism to Abstract Expressionism late in his art career.

He said, "Lend your ears to music, open your eyes to painting, and...
STOP THINKING."

What is
 ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM?
Abstract expressionism is the term applied to new forms of abstract art developed in New York by American painters such as Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and Willem de Kooning in the Post World War II, 1940s and 1950s.  It was the first specifically American movement to achieve international influence and put New York City at the center of the western art world, a role formerly filled by Paris. Abstract Expressionism is often characterized by gestural brush-strokes or mark-making, and the impression of spontaneous emotional expression. This was often called "action painting". To me, AEx is about using lines, shapes and colors to communicate a mood or emotion, Rather than trying to make an actual tangible portrait, landscape, or still life, AEx is creating a picture of something intangible, it is a picture of something emotional and untouchable. When you look at the end result, it is a symphony of colors, lines and shapes.

Modern Abstract Expressionism.
I was greatly impressed and inspired by these paintings I saw
at Newk's Eatery that were created by "Harper".

Let's Make an Abstract Expressionist Painting.

1. Listen to instrumental music.
Try to imagine lines, colors and shapes dancing to the music.
Try to capture the emotion in your head.
Music he listened to here...

2. Get blank white paper.
Add black lines and shapes on paper to communicate the mood of the music.
You can use rulers, cups to make straight lines and circles.
Do not use stencils of tangible objects (cats, dogs, ect.)

3. Use paint to fill in parts of the painting with color.
